Wikipedia states the word comes from the French word massage meaning “friction of kneading”, or from Arabic massa meaning “to touch, feel or handle” or from Latin massa meaning “mass, dough”, Greek verb μάσσω (massō) “to handle, touch, to work with the hands.
Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees forearm, feet and massage equipment. Massage uses various techniques, working and acting on the body causing pressure, tension, or motion or a combination.
There are a multitude of styles of massage, depending on the origin of the technique, it can be helpful to help enhance muscle function, decrease muscle reflex activity, inhibit motor-neuron excitability, promote the healing process, promote relaxation and well-being of body, mind and spirit.
